How Permanent is Our Information Storage?
We tend to think that our stored knowledge is good forever. This false sense of permeance has fooled many of us. A recent article in The Guardian, would lead you to believe the same thing.
An article in The Guardian in 2028 stated “Happily, the standard .jpg/jpeg picture file format developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group may well last “for ever” despite efforts to replace it …”
As things would have it, our information formats are just not that permanent. Libraries fight with this difficulty constantly. A recent update in PC Magazine gives us the sad news that JPEG is on its way out.
